Christmas is awesome

Awesome party with the book club ladies.  Missing Lynn - not so awesome.  Imperfect health - not so awesome.  Imperfect job situations - not so awesome.  Imperfect families - not so awesome.  But sharing it all with friends makes it all perfect.  Merry Christmas and may it contain many imperfect beautiful memories.

Advent Prayer

Borrowed this - think it sums up the season wonderfully

Father in the wilderness of the Jordan you sent a messenger to prepare people's hearts for the coming of your Son.  Help me to hear his words and repent of my sins so that I may clearly see the way to walk, the truth to speak and the life to live for Him our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

My Brother

This is Brother John and Nephew Rome watching the Space Shuttle being retired and going through the streets of LA.  One year and a few days before that, John was totally paralyzed in hospital with Guillan Barre.  I smile everytime I see him!!!!!!

I've been promoted!

Worked the GPI booth at Issaquah Salmon Days today.  How fun - lots of leashes to hold and lots of people stopping by the booth to give our hounds some love, puppy cookies and donations!  Especially loved watching the cute little ones love bombing the puppies.

Double rainbow

So I was walking to work this morning and was wondering why everyone was taking pictures.  Then I turned around.  Co-workers John and Sarah had to remind me to walk but not into cars!  Very distracting!  Also a beautiful bright orange sunrise.  Everyone started out in a little bit better mood today.

Bloom by Kelle Hampton

Kelle Hampton is the blogger-mom phenomenon who touched many thousands of people with her blog Enjoying the Small Things (Nella's story on my blog/link list). Nella is her daughter who was born with Down's Syndrome.

Kelle's blog went viral with her description of Nella's birth and the shock and sorrow of learning about the diagnosis of Down's Syndrome, followed by joy and love.  One of my favorite episodes in the book is Kelle describing Lainey (older daughter) meeting Nella for the first time.  Kelle was worried about all the ways that Lainey would also be affected by the diagnosis but her fears proved groundless.  Kelle says that Lainey taught her what unconditional love looked like that day.

Between her honest writing about almost every aspect of her life and her beautiful photography (Kelle is a professional photographer too), Kelle's story is captivating.  The book fills in a few gaps I don't remember from the blog but both are beautiful and unforgettable.

Ballard Locks and Botanical Gardens

What a photo op day!  Easy to spend an entire afternoon watching gill net fisherman, walking gardens, sitting on beautiful terraced lawn and of course watching the boats go through the locks. Biggest group of boats I've ever seen went through all at once and the entire length of the locks was opened to accommodate them all.

High Flight

Jim read this at his Father's internment service Thursday.  Seemed extremely fitting since Mac worked on numerous planes during his career as an aeronautical engineer starting during WWII.  He wanted to enlist during college but was told his services as an engineer were more valuable. Rest in peace Mac. We love you.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee
No 412 squadron, RCAF
Killed 11 December 1941

More wildflowers

This time of year, apparently don't have to go far to see wildflowers. These are on the walk from bus station to work.  Most of the year, they look like big tall weeds.

Mac, you will always be our hero

My beloved father-in-law Mac passed away this evening, peacefully, with Celtic music playing in the background and holding his granddaughter's hand.  We hear that at the end he looked up, smiled and then laughed.  We think he was seeing his much-missed Beth again.

This week-end at the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival, we hung a lantern in his honor.

Mac, heaven is a little richer tonight and the earth is a littler poorer.

Couldn't resist sharing this

Hokey-Pokey by William Shakespeare

By Jeff Brechlin

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within

Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.

Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:

Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.

Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,

A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.

To spin! A wilde release from Heaven’s yoke.

Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.

The Hoke, the poke—banish now thy doubt

Verily, I say, ‘tis what it’s all about.

There's no I in team

What a week-end at the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon boat race.  Habu had great times on and off the water. Made the finals in the 2nd highest division out of 180 boats.  Also beat several of our fellow Sake teams.

Thanks to everyone for the great time and keeping a great attitude despite the major downpour and leaky tents!  Thanks also to Luise and Angela for showing much more grace than I when it was their turn to rotate out for a race.  Habu "soggy" rocks!

Hey book club ladies - reading the Bone People in picture 2.

More wisdom obtained while sitting at Michelle's desk

This saying about hugs is at Michelle's desk and at the nurses desk. It started a great discussion with a patient especially when I shared Lynn's experience with Amma, the wise woman and spiritual leader who sat as long as 22 hours to give everyone waiting a hug. Michelle always seems to know when friends, patients, etc need a wonderful healing hug. Anyway, here's the hug quote, actually two, since I found two different versions online.
Hugging is good medicine. It transfers energy, and gives the person hugged an emotional boost. You need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and twelve for growth. A hug makes you feel good. The skin is the largest organ we have and it needs a great deal of care. A hug can cover a lot of skin and gives the message that you care. It is also a form of communication. It can say things you don't have words for. The nicest thing about a hug is that you usually can't give one without getting one. ~ Author Unknown

Scientist say that hugging is a form of communication because it can say the things you don’t have the words for. And the nicest thing about a hug is that you usually can’t give one without getting one.”

Meet the neighbors

These guys live right across the parking lot. I have tried to take pictures of them for years but they always ran away before I could get a camera. The kids here love to feed them, the sheep love it, the owner might not approve!

I love dragon boating

Last saturday was the first race of the season - Saint Martin's Festival in Olympia. Habu won silver medals, a trophy and had a blast. I was working so was not able to paddle but took the folks to see the last few races including the finals. I shamelessly stole the pics from Coach Karin's facebook but I took some of the pictures with her camera so that's not exactly stealing I think!?

The End of the Affair by Graham Greene

The book I "had" to read as an English major at UW. The movie I just watched last night.

In WWII era Britain, Sarah is married to the stodgy but kindly statesman Henry. She has a passionate affair with Bendrix, a writer with a lot less stability and security. The affair ends abruptly after a bombing. Years later, Bendrix pieces together what happened with the help of a private investigator and his son.

Wonderful acting by Julianne Moore, Ralph Fiennes and Stephen Rea. Graham Greene's story is beautiful and complex with lots of surprises. Who does Bendrix hate? Who is Sarah in love with now? Hint is that Greene frequently addresses Christian issues in his writing.

Greene makes some interesting statements about love, faith, friendship and lots of other everyday human issues. Movie also beautifully shot in Britain including some great footage in the "Coney Island of Britain" - Brighton.

One last thing I loved about this movie is the way the director and/or screenwriter presents several scenes first through Bendrix's eyes, then through Sarah's.

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

I finally got this March book club selection from the library. Jan was right, the mystery book reader in me really adored this book. Read it in 2 days and now am re-reading it.

Three "cold case" murder mysteries. One private detective who as the book club ladies mentioned, does seem to tie the stories together in a way. I lost count of how many characters are involved, but the author seems to really develop each one. I felt that I got to know each character in depth.

Loved the writing. Almost an old fashioned Agatha Christie tone to the stories. Very gory in parts but loved these hard-to-solve mysteries told so skillfully.

More wisdom from MIchelle's desk

I think I have mentioned before that I sometimes fill in at our radiology department's front desk. Michelle's desk is filled with wonderful pictures and sayings. This inspiration seems to always help Michelle be a blessing to our patients. Last week, I was filling in and Michelle asked me to give something to a patient who was due to arrive soon. Turned out that the patient mentioned to Michelle that she was having a really tough time. Michelle's small gift brought the patient to tears and I was honored to be the bearer of love!

One of the most recent additions to Michelle's collection is Proverbs 3:17-18

17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.

World Made By Hand by James Howard Kunstler

Another post-apocalyptic book which really grew on me as the story evolved.

Basically, the world is status post nuclear disaster. No computers, extremely rare electricity flickers, no gasoline, this just starts to describe the changes the survivors experience. Robert is the protagonist and he narrates the story in a clear, matter of fact manner which really makes the horrific things he is describing seem even more dramatic.

Robert's past life in the software industry does little to prepare him for this new world but he manages to survive, even thrive. He takes up carpentry and makes a life for himself without resorting to his community's violent crime network, almost slave-like farm commune or not-quite-cultlike religious group.

I think one of the most interesting things about this book is watching Robert struggle through multiple ethical and moral gray areas as he lives his new life.

From Lynn

Thanks Lynn - http://www.dailylifesinspiration.com is awesome!

A minister passing through his church in the middle of the day,
Decided to pause by the altar and see who had come to pray.

Just then the back door opened, a man came down the aisle,
The minister frowned as he saw the man hadn’t shaved in a while.

His shirt was kinda shabby and his coat was worn and frayed.
The man knelt, he bowed his head, then rose and walked away.

In the days that followed, each noon time – came this chap,
Each time he knelt just for a moment, a lunch pail in his lap.

Well, the minister’s suspicions grew, with robbery a main fear,
He decided to stop the man and ask him, “What are you doing here?”

http://www.dailylifesinspiration.com/just-checking-in

The old man said, he worked down the road – Lunch was half an hour.
Lunchtime was his prayer time, for finding faith, strength and power.

“I stay only moments, see, the factory is so far away;
As I kneel here talking to the Lord, this is kinda what I say:

“I just came again to tell you Lord, how happy I have been,
Since we found each other’s friendship and you took away my sin.

Don’t know much of how to pray, but I think about you everyday.
So, Jesus, this is Jim – just checking in.”

The minister feeling foolish, told Jim that was fine.
He told the man he was welcome to come and pray anytime.

“Time to go”, Jim smiled, and said “thanks” as he hurried to the door.
The minister knelt at the alter, he’d never done that before.

His cold heart melted, warmed with love, and met with Jesus there.
As the tears flowed, in his heart, he repeated old Jim’s prayer:

“I just came again to tell you Lord, how happy I have been,
Since we found each other’s friendship and you took away my sin.

Don’t know much of how to pray, but I think about you everyday.
So, Jesus, This is me – just checking in.”

Past noon one day, the minister noticed that old Jim had not come.
As more days passed with no sign of Jim, he began to worry some.

At the factory, he asked about him, learning he was ill.
The hospital staff was worried, but Jim had given them a thrill.

The week that Jim was with them, he brought changes in the ward.
His smiles, a joy contagious – changed people, were his reward.

The head nurse couldn’t understand why Jim was so glad,
When no flowers, calls or cards came, not a visitor he had.

The minister stayed by Jim’s bed, he voiced the nurse’s concern.
No friends came to show they cared, he had nowhere to turn.

Looking surprised, old Jim spoke up and with a winsome smile -
“The nurse is wrong, she couldn’t know, that in here all the while,

Everyday at noon – He’s here, a dear friend of mine, you see,
He sits right down, takes my hand, leans over and says to me:

“I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, JIM,
HOW HAPPY I HAVE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND THIS WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIP,
AND I TOOK AWAY YOUR SIN.
I ALWAYS LOVE TO HEAR YOU PRAY,
AND I THINK ABOUT YOU EVERY DAY,
AND SO JIM, THIS IS JESUS … CHECKING IN.”

From Emily

Dragon boat coach Ilana is getting back into running so told her I would post this. Emily sent it to me before my two 5ks this fall. Good luck at Boston Emily!

I saw this and though of you! “It starts with the simple desire to lose a few pounds or scratch off a bucket list item. We begin nervously, but as the layers of doubt and fear and fat are shed, the magic of the run sets in. Over the miles, we stir our souls, open our hearts, sharpen our minds, and strengthen our bodies. As we break down what was, we allow our best self to shine through. This completely predictable, yet always powerful story begins again each day when another woman laces up, dusts off her heart, and says ‘I’m going for a run.’”

Gratitude

This is from Father Jim's blog - my blog has a link there too. Father Jim's sermons and apparently even his blog often point my heart and mind in the right direction. I was just writing about my imperfect, self-absorbed day and then I read this:

Gratitude
How can I thank God for all he has done for me?

GOD'S RESPONSE

We praise God for the wonderful kindness he has poured out on us because we belong to his dearly loved Son. Ephesians 1:6

Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be revered above all gods. The gods of other nations are merely idols, but the LORD made the heavens! 1 Chronicles 16:25-26

Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD? Who can ever praise him half enough? Psalm 106:2

Let us continually offer our sacrifice of praise to God by proclaiming the glory of his name. Hebrews 13:15

✙ You can thank God by offering him a sacrifice of praise. What does that mean? It means that you sacrifice, or give up something, to praise him instead. You might give up some sleep to get up early to praise him. Maybe you will give up some free time to spend time in prayer praising him. Perhaps you need to give up complaining to praise him for all he has done for you. Whatever it is for you, give God praise. He is worthy of it.

GOD'S CHALLENGE

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. PSALM 92:1

Praying Lent

I really do love this website. The link is on the right side of my blog about half way down. They have scripture readings and prayers for everyday of Lent. This is todays closing prayer:

God of Love,
through this Lenten journey,
purify my desires to serve you.
Free me from any temptations to judge others,
to place myself above others.
Please let me surrender even my impatience with others,
that with your love and your grace,
I might be less and less absorbed with myself,
and more and more full of the desire
to follow you, in laying down my life
according to your example.

Today was an extremely imperfect and self absorbed day so these words really hit home.

Happy Birthday Dad

We love you!

Happy Birthday Rome

Nephew Rome in LA is enjoying his birthday with Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa.

Love this latest picture.
